CINE 202 Film History II: 1960—Present (Cal State Long Beach, Fall 2026)
This course offers an overview of film history from the 1960s to the present, a period marked by profound transformations in how films are made, circulated, exhibited, and understood. Moving across different national and transnational contexts, we will examine the new waves and politically engaged cinemas of the 1960s and 1970s, the emergence of New Hollywood and the blockbuster, transformations in film industries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, and the increasingly global networks of production, festivals, distribution, and exhibition that have shaped contemporary cinema.
Note: I skipped over most European movements in this class since there is a dedicated European Cinema class at my department being frequently offered. With a limited space in the syllabus, it would make the most sense to discuss movements and films from elsewhere, which I still had a hard time pairing down. In different versions of the class, I rotate through various nations, movements, etc.
Week 1: Introduction + French New Wave
Week 2: Francophone African Cinema
